A Lifelong Journey Through Science Fiction
My name is Larry Sapp, and my fascination with science fiction began when I was a young boy.
I would rush home from school every afternoon so I could catch the latest episode of The Adventures of Superman, starring George Reeves. I was fascinated by this strange visitor from another planet who could fly, possessed incredible powers, and always seemed to arrive just in time to rescue someone in trouble.
Then came The Day the Earth Stood Still.
That movie opened an entirely new door for me. I began to seriously consider the possibility that we might not be alone in the universe. I remember thinking that perhaps visitors from other worlds were watching us—not simply to see what we could accomplish, but also to see how destructive we might become.
My enthusiasm for science fiction continued to grow.
While I was in high school, I was required to take a creative writing class. After reading several of my assignments, my teacher told me that I had an aptitude for the “strange” and “bizarre.”
I took that as a compliment.
Although I didn't pursue writing at the time, those words stayed with me.
Shortly after graduation, Star Trek appeared on television and once again transported my imagination to an unbelievable—but absolutely marvelous—place. Then came Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and countless other stories, books, films, and television programs.
Through all the decades since, I have maintained a fascination with the things that challenge what we believe to be possible. I have always been intrigued by one deceptively simple question:
“What if?”
What if we could travel faster than light?
What if we discovered life on another world?
What if artificial intelligence became truly intelligent?
What if the impossible wasn't impossible after all?
Science fiction has always given us permission to ask those questions.
As the years passed, my children and grandchildren introduced me to another enormous part of the genre—the universes of DC and Marvel. I have continued to enjoy new books, new stories, new television productions, and new theatrical releases.
Christopher Reeve even managed to convince me, at least for a little while, that a man really could fly.
And I have been soaring through the realm of science fiction ever since.
Why Sci Fi Junction?
Over the years, I became increasingly aware that many other people shared that same fascination with science fiction. I also began to realize that something else was happening.
The history, ideas, stories, creators, and experiences that helped shape this remarkable genre were slowly being threatened by the greatest enemy of them all:
Time.
Books disappear from shelves. Old television programs are forgotten. Films that once captivated audiences become obscure.
Writers, artists, scientists, filmmakers, actors, and other creators whose work helped shape science fiction eventually pass from the scene.
I wanted to help preserve those memories while also looking toward the future.
That is why I created Sci Fi Junction.
My vision is for Sci Fi Junction to be a place where fans, authors, creators, scientists, filmmakers, historians, and anyone fascinated by the possibilities of science fiction can come together.
Here you will find stories, articles, interviews, podcasts, discussions, and explorations of the past, present, and future of science fiction.
Some will be serious. Some will be educational. Some may be controversial. And some may simply be fun.
But all of them will begin with the same question that has fascinated me for most of my life:
What IF?
I hope you will explore Sci Fi Junction, discover something new, revisit something you remember, and perhaps see an old idea in an entirely new way.
